The first in a whole "film universe", about real-world "demonologists" Ed & Lorraine Warren, of Amityville fame, on a non-Amityville haunting. It opens by introducing Annabelle, the haunted Chucky doll knock-off who is not relevant to this film at all, but will get several spin-off films later.

stay tuned for a sequel

Ed is the down-to-earth church-going young man who drives a muscle car and cooks pancakes for the elderly. Lorraine has visions of demons and ghosts and witches and stuff, and is generally pretty bad a communicating. They hang out with haunted families and try to gather evidence and footage of ghosts.

hauntings were in abundance in the 1970s

It's a real straightforward high-budget haunted house film. Clocks stopping, mysterious bumps and bangs, doors opening and closing, a boarded up basement cellar, mom waking up with unexplained bruises. Mom is Lili Taylor of Pecker and High Fidelity, dad is Ron Livingston of Office Space.

ghosts in the clicky old music box mirrors

Lorraine has a vision of a witch hanging from the crooked old tree in the backyard, so she and Ed move in to cook pancakes and have visions about things. Their cameras flash and bells jingle and people get tossed around.

pancakes don't solve the ghost problem

The family, quite fed up, moves out, but the demon has already possessed one of the kids and they have to argue with priests for a while before they can film a real straightforward high-budget exorcism scene, and live happily ever after.

maybe close your mouth when a ghost vomits on you?
